Buying The Right Domain Name
Having the right domain name can be vital to the success of a website....
Memorability
.....A website's domain name should be short, easy to type and above all, memorable. Using hyphens to break up words may look more attractive, but it creates more confusion when it comes to remembering it - but if it's the only option, try to only use a single hyphen.
Keywords
The use of keywords in domain names works well in the search engine world. A website containing a searcher's query in its domain name will be considered very relevant by the major search engines and will be ranked higher as a result. If this method means that you can't create a short, snappy domain you may wish to also register a few "proxy" domains. Proxy domains are those which simply redirect the visitor to your main website. Register proxy domains rich in keywords to have the best effect.
Registering Your Domain
By far the simplest way to register and maintain your domain name is to have ORCA do it for you. We will take care of the registration process and handle any technical requirements. If you are more "hands-on", there are many companies (registrars) out there who let you register and maintain the domain yourself. If you choose this approach, we strongly recommend choosing a larger company who offer a wider variety of maintenance options.
Our favourite registrars are 123-Reg.co.uk and 1and1.co.uk because they provide their customers with tools to edit many of the different domain name settings such as:
- Website Forwarding
- A and MX records
- Nameserver settings
- Domain Name Locking (.com, .net, .org domains)
- IPS Tag (.co.uk domains only)
Although we charge slightly more than it would cost to register a domain for you, many clients prefer to have us do it for them as they then have the peace of mind that it has been done correctly - and we always register domains in the client's name.
